My Heart Aches

Religious Jews rioting outside the Israeli Supreme Court this afternoon. When I have some more time, perhaps I will be able to adequately express my pain over what is happening in Israel at this moment. In the meantime, you can read about the rioting here and here.

  1. As much as I hate to defend such disgusting people, from what I gather, the only crime of the rabbi was writing something racist. Despicable, to be sure, but not, in my view, worthy of placing someone under arrest. In the civilized democracy that Israel is, freedom of speech must reign supreme. A certain quotation from Voltaire comes to mind...

  2. On freedom of expression grounds I agree with you. But the real story here is not about free expression. It's about the de-legitimization (I hate that word) of the Israeli Supreme Court and the rule of law. After all, it wasn't the Supreme Court that arrested Lior, but that's where the anger was unleashed.
